HI CUZ Blog 112 REV A

Reminder, your acceptance of this newsletter signifies that you will not use its contents to alter, and thus disrespect in any form or way, the historical religious beliefs, no matter what they were – or were not – of family members mentioned herein.

This reminder specifically refers to performing LDS ordinances using any of the data in this or other HICUZ newsletters or blog posts.

Recall that if we can trace back to a common ancestor three generations ago (great grandparents) we have a second cousin connection. Three generations – second cousins, four generations - third cousins, et cetera.

The information in the next few HICUZ blogs will have data on older Rowe generations presented first.

I wanted to identify first cousin family names associated with my Rowe Aunts and Uncles –

John Henry and Ella (Grace) Rowe – Rowe; Collins; Bertolucci; Wilson; Koch; Berwick;
            Barnhouse; Wilcox; Sullivan; and Hatcher

Francis Stephen and Sarah (Coyne) Rowe – Rowe; Madore; Contois; Tomusko; and Littlejohn

Edwin Leonard and Rose (Devine) Rowe – Rowe; Redmond; Bielecki; and Stevens

William Thomas and Marion (Littlefield) Rowe – Rowe; Gillis; DiBiase; Pillsbury; Meyer;
Fraser; Perkins; Wilson; Gay; Marshall; Gill; Thompson; French; and Casey

Joseph William and Teresa Tamborrel (Amador) Rowe – Bengtsson; Tandanaset; Innocenti; and
            Sofri

Looking back – My brother Dan and I went up to South Portland, Maine about 1995 to pay our respects at our parents resting place. We also visited the resting places of our Great Grandparents Thomas and Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Rowe and John Shannon (Shanaghan) and said a prayer.

We also found two family gravesites, one for the McBrady family, noting "Anne. M. Rowe, his wife." She was a sister of Grampa William Joseph Rowe.  The second gravesite was for the Shannon and Keeble families.  Recalling that Gramma Rowe's name was Americanized from Shanaghan to Shannon we stopped.  Noted as being buried there (Section M, plot 149) were John Shannon, died 1901 and Elizabeth A. Shannon, died 1929. Lena (Shanaghan) Keeble and several other Keebles were noted on the same headstone.

Thus this plot contains Great Grampa Shanaghan and two of his daughters (sisters of Gramma Catherine Shanaghan Rowe).  The reason I mention this again is that I found and re-read an old letter from first cousin Mary (Rowe) Redmond, who went through some cemetery records and found there were three Keeble children: Ellen (Helen as listed above); Elizabeth; and George.

Based on research in 2015 I believe the son noted just above as George Keeble was the father, and the son was actually William Clifford Keeble, born 22 August 1895.

I wrote to the Maine State Archives years ago for Great Grampa John Shanaghan's death certificate, in hopes of identifying his parents, cause of death and exact address at time of death.  The death certificate gave only Great Grampa's father's name, Dennis Shannon, and his occupation as a farmer. Years ago I reviewed the 1851 and 1861 Canadian census reports for Quebec, Portneuf County, and the parish of Ste Basile where our Canadian Shanaghan ancestors lived.  I've found the family of Great Grandparents Dennis and Catherine (McCarthy) Shanaghan living next door to Great Great Grandparents John and Ellen (Mylar) Shanaghan (and her parents).

First cousin Eleanore (Rowe) Tomusko wrote long ago that Gramma Catherine Shannon (really Shanaghan) had several sisters - Anne Elizabeth Shanaghan who was called "Aunt Lizzie" and never married, and another sister called "Lena" who married George Keeble.  I suspect that this Lena was Suzanne Shanaghan, as Gramma's other sisters did not live beyond three years of age.  Mrs. Lena Keeble was the mother of one son and a daughter Elizabeth Keeble who lived with Uncle George and Aunt Alice Foley at 24 Washburn Avenue in Portland.

First cousin Eleanore (Rowe) Tomusko later stated that Gramma Catherine Shannon (real maiden name was Shanaghan) had two sisters that she knew of - Suzanne "Lena" Keeble, wife of George Keeble, and the mother of Elizabeth Keeble who lived with Uncle George and Aunt Alice (Rowe) Foley, and one son.  The only other sister that I positively know of who survived past two years and who did not marry was Ann Elizabeth Shannon (Shanaghan), known as "Aunt Lizzie."

Shanaghan Family research -  As sources of Shanaghan research, besides the inputs from first cousins Eleanore (Rowe) Tomusko and Mary (Rowe) Redmond, I used two microfilms of Canadian Census reports for Quebec Province, Portneuf County, St Basile Parish - 1861 (film #0517407) and 1871 (0493471). The Canadian censuses lag those of America by a year, as do British censuses.

Thanks again to Cuz Scott Rowe for the website of Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine where many ancestors, are interred:  http://portlanddiocese.org/genealogy

I entered the data below with the same errors/differences in names and date I found.

In National Archives holdings - Index to Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at Boston, MA, 1820--1891. M277. 115 rolls. A search of the film numbers to match Josephus arrival in Boston on 7 June 1853 confirmed roll 44 as the correct film. My records show that roll 44 is at the National Archives, Washington, DC - reel 232, aisle 6, cabinet 104, drawer 4. Cuz Scott Rowe sent along a scanned copy of the entry with Thomas and Mary (Meagher/Mahir) Wroe noted.

1853 – Boston City Directory – Thomas Rowe, laborer, house 28 Nashua Street, Boston,
MA. Data thanks to Cuz Eleanore (Rowe) Tomusko.
1860 – US Census – census dated 9 June 1860 – no street address identifiable. Thomas
age 30, laborer born England. Mary age 26, born Ireland. William age 7, born at
sea. Ann age 5, born Maine. Catherine age 1, born Maine.
1870 – US Census – Thomas and Mary Rowe, plus siblings William age 17; Ann age 15;
Kate age 11; Mary age 5; Jane age 3. Thomas’ age was 7. William was a
            machinist; others were students.
1880 – US Census – Thomas and Mary Rowe, their children -Kate age 20; Thomas age
17; Mary age 15; Jane age 12, and Lizzie age 9.

Thomas and Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Rowe had the following family:

1 - William Joseph Wroe, b at sea on Josephus 4 June 1853 m Catherine Ellen Shanaghan.
Name Americanized to Rowe at Customs, Boston, MA 9 June. MY GRANDFATHER

2 - Ann Rowe, b 28 Dec 1854, age 15 in 1870 US Census. Didn’t appear in 1880 census. Ann (a)
“Annie” M. Rowe married John E. McBrady 10 Sep 1876.

3 – Margaret Rowe, b 1856, lived Hancock Court, Portland; d 22 Nov 1858 @ 2.

4 - Catherine “Kate” Meagher Rowe, b 13 Dec 1858. She appeared at age 11 (b abt 1858/59) in
1870 US Census. Kate appeared at age 20 in 1880 US Census, thus b abt 1860. No
conclusive data has been found as to her date of death or burial place.

5 – Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rowe, b 1860 - Monument St, Portland; d 25 Sep 1863 @ 3. Birth year
based on death record. Cemetery record says died 24 Sep 1863 at 2 yrs, 11 months.
Buried at Cavalry Cemetery Church Circle, lot 69, and grave 5. The first Lizzie.

6 - Mary Eliza Rowe, born 8 Feb 1861. The transcribed record in Portland, ME record of birth
says she was dau of Wm and Catherine Rowe of Portland, ME. This is erroneous, as
Wm J. was eight and Catherine only nine years of age then. Date of birth suggests
Thomas and Mary were her parents.

Alternate date of birth of Mary E. 2 May 1865 per McLewin Family Tree
Link follows, thanks to first cousin once removed Scott Rowe

7 - Thomas Meagher Rowe, b 10 Feb 1863; d 7 May 1921, age 58. Buried Calvary Cemetery
Church Circle, lot 69, grave 1.

9 – The second Lizzie Rowe - Elizabeth “Lizzie” Rowe, b 29 Dec 1871; d after 1910. Never
married. No conclusive data has been found as to her date of death or burial place.

Thomas Rowe (ne Wroe) and Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Rowe had two daughters named Elizabeth. The first was born in 1860 and died 25 Sep 1863. The second Elizabeth was born 29 Dec 1871 and was probably identified as “Lizzie” thereafter.

Great Great Aunt Catherine (Meagher/Mahir) Murray
1821 – May - Catherine Mahir born in Ireland to Jeremiah and
Johanna/Catherine (Casey) Mahir (Maine death certificate spelling)
1852 – She emigrated to USA per 1900 US Census of Portland, ME. As her married
name was used in that census it suggests she was married before leaving Ireland.

All data on Michael Murray is inconclusive and speculative, as several men of that name appear. We can be certain that Gramma Rowe’s sister did marry a Michael Murray, they had one child, and it did not live to adulthood.

1853 – 17 April – Mary Ann Murray born to Michael and Catherine (Meagher/Mahir)
Murray in Portland, ME. This daughter died before 1900.
1860 – Portland City Directory – lived Washington Street
1860 – US Census – not found in ancestry.com database search.

Separate entry – laborer at 90 Washington Street.
1879 - Portland City Directory – Michael Murray, laborer 47 Washington Street
1883 - Portland City Directory – Michael Murray, mason 166 Washington Street
1884 - Portland City Directory – worked as a mason; lived at 166 Washington Street,
Portland. He was the sole Michael Murray in that directory.
1885 - Portland City Directory – Michael Murray 166 Washington Street
1894 – Death Certificate for a Michael Murray, date of death 30 Oct 1894. His father
given as Patrick Murray, his mother as Margaret Mannahan. His occupation was
given as mason. No wife was listed. Inconclusive.
1900 - US Census – shows Catherine Murray, sister, age 72, born May 1821 (in Ireland)
living with her widowed sister Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Rowe at 54 Adams
Street, Portland, ME. Census shows Mary Ellen’s date of birth as April 1832; her
Age shown as 68. Living there with them - Thomas H. Rowe, age 29, born Sep
1860; and Lizzie E. Rowe, age 27, born Dec 1872. Census states Catherine
Murray had one child, which was no longer alive.
1909 - 19 January, age 68, died. Buried Cavalry Cemetery, So. Portland, ME – Church
Circle, lot 69, grave 6.  No surviving children from marriage to Michael Murray.
Lived 61 Adams Street at time of death.

Maine State death certificates for Catherine (Meagher/Mahir) Murray and Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Rowe. The certificates each state deceased lived on Adams Street. The certificates identify their parents as:
Mary Ellen –age 69, 1 Jan 1902, widow of Thomas Rowe. Parents - Jeremiah Mahir and
                        Catherine Casey.
Catherine - age 68, 19 Jan 1909, widow of Michael Murray. Parents - Jeremiah Mahir
                        and Johanna Casey.

Cousin Scott Rowe found a Catherine Casey among the 208 passengers on Josephus in 1853. If correct, that might identify her as the mother of both Mary Ellen (Meagher/Mahir) Wroe/Rowe and Catherine Meagher/Mahir (later married to Michael Murray.) It is also possible that Catherine Meagher/Mahir used her mothers’ maiden name as her identity as a passenger, or that this Catherine Casey was just an unrelated person of similar name. Data deemed inconclusive.

1861 Canadian census stated that Thomas Shanaghan died at age seven months of the measles. For historical interest, St Basile 1861 parish's records are under index 438, in folio 288, and the Shanaghans are on lines 13 thru 19, with the Mylar’s just above them on lines 11 and 12.  The 1861 census shows Susana (12); Catherine (8); Elizabeth (6); William (5); and Thomas - who died in Oct 1860.

1871 – Canadian Census – The 1871 census shows Suzane 21; Catharine 18; Liza (Elizabeth) - 17; William 14; and Linia (or Livia) 12. Linia was not shown in the parish records I reviewed. Both Gramma Catherine’s' father and grandfather were "cultivateurs" or farmers.  Canadian census reports, at least in Quebec, listed           each individual's religion.  It was also apparent that even within St Basile parish there were predominantly French, English, and Irish neighborhoods. No street addresses were present in either census report.

In 1871 Gramma Catherine's mothers' name was spelled Helene (with a French accent). By 1871 Catherine’s grandmother Elizabeth Larkin had apparently dead, but her grandfather Thomas Mylar (apparently an Irish spelling) was alive at 87.  Thomas Mylar and Elizabeth (Larkan or Larhan) Mylar, as well as John Shanaghan and Helen (Mylar) Shanaghan were born in Ireland.  Gramma Catherine and all her siblings were born in Ste. Basile Parish, Portneuf County of Quebec Province, Canada.

The promising fact was that William John Shanaghan (Gramma Catherine's brother) was 14 in 1871, suggesting he may have lived, married - providing present-day second Shanaghan cousins.
