New Data Sources

Thanks to McLeod Clan for this update.

Two new sources for genealogical data have become available recently.

The Cape Breton Genealogical & Historical Society has published on CD many of the 19th century marriage records from the various counties on the island.  These CDs contain images of the original records.

The second new source is one that has been taking up much of my time this summer, and will probably continue to do so throughout the winter and beyond.

The Family Search website

contains records from the Catholic Diocese of Antigonish from 1823-1905.
This is a partner project with the Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia to index digital images for this Catholic diocese. The images contain church records for some, but not all parishes in the diocese and include christenings, marriages and births.

Record History
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Antigonish was originally known as the Diocese of Arichat and was established on September 22, 1844. Previously the diocese was part of the Diocese of Quebec. On August 23, 1886, the see was moved from Arichat to the town of Antigonish, and the diocese becamethe Diocese of Antigonish. The diocese covers seven counties in northeastern Nova Scotia: Richmond, Inverness, Victoria, Cape Breton, Antigonish, Pictou and Guysborough. Catholic records are traditionally kept on the parish level so the registers are usually found at the church where the event occurred.
Based on statistics from the 1901 Canadian census, around 28% of the population of Nova Scotia was Catholic and 58% of the Catholics in Nova Scotia lived in the Diocese of Antigonish. About 68% of the pre-1906 parishes in the diocese are included in this record set.

Searching the Site
The site’s search engine is quite useful.  My first search was for the last name of MacFarlane.  This would show any record in which the surname MacFarlane shows, including spelling variations.  This would include the name appearing as a baptized child, the parent thereof, a husband or spouse of a marriage or the parent of the husband of the marriage (why not the wife’s parents I can’t say).  Four hundred twenty-nine records appeared!  There were some duplication but since every Catholic MacFarlane in Nova Scotia appears to be a descendant of Dougald this one search provided me with a
tremendous amount of new data.

Of course not all of Dougald & Margaret’s descendants or their parents have the surname MacFarlane.  These searches are going much more slowly, as they must be done, for the most part, on a one-by-one basis.

Website Update

I’ve been making some major additions and revisions to the web site, I hope you make a visit.

The People’s Clearance 1770-1815

By J. M. Bumsted

This is my third reading of this particular book.  Each re-reading reveals several new nuggets of information.
At the time of its first publication in 1982 it was considered as a revisionist account of early Highland Scottish emigration to what is now Canada.  The accepted view of the time was of oppressed, impoverished peasantry being driven off the estates to make way for sheep.  While this picture was certainly true of later, post 1815 Scotland, the author, with careful documentation paints a very different picture of the earlier period.
One of the principle exports of Scotland throughout its long history had been people, but the emigration that began in 1763 was regarded as new, different and extremely frightening.  For the first time men became aware of the possibility that the wrong people were emigration.  Prior to this time the only organized groups leaving Scotland were the result of government policy, such as the deportation of Jacobites.  Post 1763 Scots were organizing to emigrate, often chartering whole ships.  Although some continued to depart as indentured servants most were able to finance their own passage.  The fact that the vast majority of emigrants paid their own way was significant for a number of reasons.  These people were the prosperous part of the laboring classes of Scotland.  They took with them a significant amount of money with them.  The organization involved suggests that the emigrants were among the more dynamic of the citizenry.
The opposition to this emigration during this by the government, the ruling class and the landlords (often the same people) is markedly different from the later forced clearances of post-1815.
Bumstead’s detailed research and extensive appendices make this a text worth reading.

Help Needed
There are a few MacFarlanes in the Diocese records that I have not been able to connect.  Your help would be appreciated.
You will see that in some cases there are whole families involved.  Please don’t be shy.  I would much rather hear from three people with the same information than from no one.
